Reasons to love the airports in the UK
I posted two entries last year about why international airports are so cool. Each airport is different, and you get to see a lot of things exclusive to a country, particularly their food. Now, there are more reasons to love airports, especially for those of us who tend to travel to them on our motorbikes.
In the UK, motorcycle parking is much cheaper than if you were using a car. Some even offer free parking spaces for motorcycles, according to Parking4Less. If you don’t have a lot of luggage to carry (or you only need two panniers for all your luggage), motorbikes are an ideal method of transportation to travel to the airport because of how cost effective it can be.
Here are several airports in the UK that have huge parking lots for motorcycles (some are free while others ask for a small fee):
London Gatwick (North Terminal) – the ground floor of the airport’s car park
London Heathrow (Terminals 1 and 3) –Car Park 1A/5
Liverpool –There are express drop off and pick up points for motorcycles, which are located just across from the main terminal building.
If you don’t have side panniers with locks and you only have a small carry-on bag, you may leave your belongings inside the airports. The luggage deposit sections, however, cost around £8 a day (around $12). Side panniers are very efficient for traveling purposes, so if you can invest in some, go for it. Car parking at airports is very secure in the UK with many of them being policed by security staff as well as monitored via CCTV cameras 24-hours a day. However, if you want added security, you might want to use a motorcycle cover to prevent people from seeing your locked panniers, regardless of whether you have anything in them or not.
When you return back from your trip, it’s important that you don’t leave the parking area without going to the customer service section with your parking ticket to get it validated. If you don’t, the machine at the terminal gate may demand a fee that is similar to the cost of parking a car, which, of course, is significantly more expensive. Obviously, you won’t encounter this sort of thing at airports with free motorcycle parking but for the others, make sure you follow the correct procedures so that you don’t incur any fines.
