Several summers ago Edward introduced me to soaking in Hot Springs. It was on our summer-long motorcycle adventure and boy, was I relieved to get the grime off as we’d been traveling on the small bikes and camping the entire summer.  We’re not those crazy-nudist-pot-smoking-hotpot-soakers (and we’ve met some)–we’re just “normal” folks that like par boiling ourselves in mineral water. One of our favorite places to soak is Lava Hot Springs.   It’s about 90 miles south of  Idaho Falls, and it is pure heaven. It’s clean, the facility is well kept, and they offer a variety of pools with a variety of temperatures.  We went there yesterday and I have to tell you, this morning and a city-water showerRead More →

Women’s Empowerment Motorcycle Tour Day Seven – Rest Day Ahhhh…a rest day. Nice. It’s been a little hard for the ladies to ride so much for so many days in a row…most of them are new to touring on a motorcycle. Two tour members got new tires and two others went off to  ride one of the scenic routes we gave them. Some of us took a walk together around town in the evening.   We listened to a pretty good (free!) concert   Said hello to the locals got some local flavor   took time to smell the flowers   laughed heartily at these folks working for their beer (wait…I don’t see anyoen driving that thing…)   ate a yummy dinner (hat’sRead More →

Third day on the Women’s Empowerment Motorcycle Tour. Karen Spotted a neat road on our way over to Montana, so we took a little detour and rode up the Spiral Highway.     Then  we rode one of my favorite roads, Route 12, Lolo Pass.         It was a long LONG day, but a spectacular ride. We ate reiverside along the gushing Clark Fork River.Read More →

Women’s Empowerment Motorcycle Tour 2011 began today! Ladies rode in today from as far away as southern California to begin our all-women’s motorccyle ” teaching tour”. A unique approach to motorcycle touring, we’re actually teaching the ladies about all aspects of motorcycle touring–how to set up a motorcycle for touring, how to pack, how to use a GPS, what to do in emergencies, basic motorcycle maintenance, how to ride in a group, etc. Karen and I are looking forward to sharing our knowledge, and also learning from these ladies as well. Our goal is to empower tour members to feel more confident riding alone and in groups, and to inspire them to exlpore on two wheels.  Support from theRead More →

I am excited to report that I am teaming up with dear friend and colleague Karen Thomson of AVID MotoTours to offer a motorcycle tour summer 2011 that empowers women and teaches them how to tour. We’re going to cover all aspects of motorcycle touring–pre-trip planning, safety on the road, traveling solo or in a group, map reading, GPS lessons, simple motorcycle maintenance, skill building exercises, and general bonding. A rolling classroom, if you will, to share the magic of motorcycling through some of the best scenery and on the best roads in the Northwest. The cool part of how we’re setting up the tour is that women can participate in the tour just to ride with other women forRead More →
